In all the mountains,
Stillness;
In the treetops
Not a breath of wind.
The birds are silent in the woods.
Just wait: soon enough
You will be quiet too.
~ Robert Hass, “After Goethe” from Time and Materials.

The wood do have a way of quieting the mind…..
Make that ‘woods’…time for a stronger pair of reading glasses. Sigh….
Oh, I’m facing same affliction.
Ahhh, glad to hear I’m not alone. Misery loves company and all…I buy them by the 6-pack these days…..
I’m on singles heading to join you on six pack bus!
It’s just easier–I sit on one pair, Beau chews on another, and so I goes…
Ha!
Good grief…and so ‘it’ goes! That’s it, leaving for the store now…
And, maybe for a moment, we can all be at peace.
Maybe. Yes.
This is actually a translation of a poem written by Goethe called ‘Wanderers Nachtlied’ [Wanderer’s Nightsong] which was voted the most beloved poem in German culture [by Germans of course].
Did not know that Todd. Thank you. I did google it to find more background. Thanks again!. Goethe, a genius.

Sunday morning!!
I wonder what he means – that soon we’ll be dead?… or that we’ll be quiet like the birds are when there’s danger (like a hawk flying by will make all the birds stop singing)?
I’m going with your second interpretation!
Safer that way!
