A globetrotting surfer seeking to catch waves in the frigid seas of Antarctica instead encountered a welcoming committee of penguins. He didn’t catch a wave in the Antarctic waters, but he didn’t much care, calling his unforgettable penguin encounter “very special.”
It’s about being out there having an intimate relationship with nature. At the very first, they were afraid of me…but then, they came around and played with me. They were really nice, really nice…It has been unreal.
The clip is beautifully paired with Patrick Watson singing “The Great Escape.”‘
Bad day, looking for a way home
looking for the great escape.
Gets in his car and drives away,
far from all the things that we are.
Puts on a smile and breathes it in
and breathes it out, he says,
bye bye bye to all of the noise.
Oh, he says, bye bye bye to all of the noise.

How awesome to be delighting in the antics and grace of these penguins in their own neighborhood. And how inviting they seem amidst all that eerie desolation and ice..I understand why he was moved to tears.

Yes, and a thermal wet suit for protection in Antarctic waters. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George was swimming in cold water…:)

This weekend they are letting the penguins out to walk free in the our Pittsburgh Zoo to get some exercise. I hope I will be able to get there to take some pictures of this activity. It’s playoff weekend, so I don’t know. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
