Yes, that’s him (or her). It was 5:25 a.m. this morning at The Cove and he’s heading back to the top of Holly Pond.
It’s been almost 2 weeks since I shared Good (?) Sunday Morning after I learned about his mate being taken down by an animal (coyote?). And he’s still searching — the shorelines, the break walls, and their nesting area.
As I stood watching him circling, Murakami’s words came to mind:
“Standing there alone, I always felt sad, a deep sadness I’d felt before, long, long ago. I remembered that sadness very well. A sadness that can’t be explained, that doesn’t melt away over time, that quietly leaves invisible wounds, in a place you cannot see. And how can you deal with something you can’t see?” (Haruki Murakami, The City and Its Uncertain Walls.)
Notes:
- More photos from this morning’s walk here.
- Post Title Inspiration: Aldous Huxley: “It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply. Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
Oh, I have missed these posts… And I feel his pain. Beautifully done, David.
Thank you Dale.
this is heartbreaking
It is Beth. Every morning to witness his grieving…
it feels heavy
That it is. And he was there again today.
We have several birds here on the island – but also birds that visit our backyard on a regular basis – that mate for life. Not every bird of course. And when I see one killed on the highway and the other pecking at it trying to get it to rise up, it breaks my heart. I feel for the swan. Thanks for witnessing him. 🙏❤️
I’m with you Bela. Feel exactly the same. Thank you for sharing.
♥️
Beautiful photo, dk.
Thank Sawsan.
Thank you for this. It has released the tears that I have held back for thirty years, also looking for my soul mate who was lost to me. Grief is a curious thing. Blessings to you.
Thank you sharing Jo. Heartwarming.
what a sad, heart-breaking tale. I know that swans mate for life and that they miss their partners for a very long time. The thought that many animals are better ‘humans’ than we are, crosses my mind often.
This swan not only misses his/her mate, but we miss you, too. Good to read you. Sorry to be mostly absent on ig, my eyes aren’t allowing me more screen time.
Thank you my Friend. It’s always so good to hear from you.
Makes my heart hurt…
Mine too!
It’s tough to see one looking for their mate. And a delight when they reappear with a new one next year. In the searching for the old they are also open to finding the new.
Glad to see you here again David. x
Thank you Val.
