SMWI*: Plank This

fitness,

GrindTV: Chinese Man Sets World Planking Record:

Mao Weidong is a 43-year old Beijing special policy deputy commander and member of Beijing SWAT team.

He set a planking world record for the longest time in an abdominal plank position with an incredible duration of 4 hours, 26 minutes.

Resting only on his elbows and tiptoes, Mao proceeded to smash the previous planking world record of 3 hours, 7 minutes and 15 seconds set by American athlete George Hood in 2013.

So, to show I still had it, I gave it a whirl. I lasted a full 90 seconds, the last 30 seconds of which my body was fully contorted. After collapsing, I noted that I lay in the recovery-face-first position longer than when I was in the plank position. (Now there’s an athlete!)

Mao Weidong, you are SuperMan.

  1. It’s a good thing he isn’t married to me–my birthday is December 30th! In your honor, David (o.k., because I felt a challenge in this post) I did a 4 minute plank. Tag, you’re it!

    1. OK. You hit a nerve. The moment I read your comment this afternoon, I set the stop watch on my smartphone and dropped to the floor. I collapsed at 2 minutes.

4 minutes!?! Am I up against a washboard stomach here?

I am NOT worthy. But I’m not done. Oh, I’m not done.

      1. Yes. Many times. We end every workout with a plank…you’d think by now I could plank for 4 minutes. A minute still feels like an eternity 🙂

        1. Really? I hadn’t even heard of planking until I saw this. I need to get out more. And yes, 1 minute is an eternity. I’m on this. Mind over matter, right? (Ha)

          1. I must set the record straight…I was – ahem – evasive shall we say, with my planking time, to save me the humiliation. I thought my omission would go unnoticed. Laughing. I can make it to a minute, but barely, and it’s not pretty. 30 seconds still on some days feels like an hour!

  2. 90 seconds is pretty good David!
Keep working up to 2 mins every day and you will have core strength to keep your back healthy for life 🙂
    Val x

  3. Catching up on posts missed while away. Planking–great exercise and a bear to do. We do 2-minute planks three times every Core class, and I can safely say that this man has my undying admiration. These puppies are no joke!

          1. Oh pshaw…. It’s just a matter of building up, adding a few seconds each time ya do it. YOU can do it, DK, just start. I have faith in you. 🙂
