I sneak a peak at the clock. 2:30 am. Early, even for me.
I’m teetering inches from the edge of the bed. Drifting in and out of consciousness.
I can hear his breathing. It’s too hot for him to sleep at our feet, under the covers, a winter pastime. So, he’s up on the pillows. This was cute as a puppy. Beastly now at 67 lbs. And he’s a leaner. On your legs. On your back. On whatever is in the way. But lean he must.
He dreams. He’s running. His paws and legs kicking. Faster. Faster. Faster. A bear pawing a tree, roughly ripping slabs of bark and digging his claws into its sinews. Or me.
Enough. Bleary eyed I grab my pillow and get up. He’s watching me warily and emits a low growl. He remembers our weak kneed attempts at re-training to have him sleep on the floor. That ended badly. For us.
I trudge up to the attic.
I toss. I turn. I toss. I turn. 3:00 am. Hopeless. I can’t settle. Doesn’t feel right.
I waddle back downstairs. Linus with his pillow and blanky in tow.
I crawl back into bed. He turns. Licks my face. Rolls over. And leans against my back.
I gently lean back into him.
Damn dog.

Lol! Bella always starts out at the foot of the bed…but somehow, some way, when I wake up in the morning, she’s under the covers with me, with her head on the pillow next to me. I wouldn’t have it any other way. 🙂 Did you say “waddle”???
You were doing so well on your comment and you just had to ruin it. 🙂 It’s clear that I have Moobs lodged in your mind. Sad. 🙂
And who is responsible for that? No matter…you are a much adored friend…Mr. Moobs. 🙂
Ha! OK, laughing. Game on.
🙂
Ah, I remember the days! MY side of the bed was Tucker’s favorite! I’d give anything to have him back in bed with me tonight! Hope you find the gift in his being around! 🙂
It is a gift Vicki. It is. Not without its sacrifices but a gift.
Ah, I know this story very well!
Don’t we all.
Love this.
Thank you.
The dog wins.
(always)
ahhhhh Yes, words from an animal lover (not)!
Hehe. He’s the King lol.
Smiling. Yes, the “real” King in this household.
Well, no rocket science really!!! 😆
Brilliant!
Laughing. You are right. No rocket science for dog owners. Thank you Marina
😉
Pal, I feel your pain. The 14 lb member of our family–who would be well nigh impossible to detect in the bed–is quite content to slumber in *her* bed on the floor. The 67 lb. child, conversely, feels that the best, nay, the only spot where he can truly find sweet repose is wrapped around mom’s head like a canine babooshka. Meanwhile hubby snores in happy oblivion. Gotta love these animals….
14 lbs. A throw pillow. I would LOVE that! And yes, he too wraps his paws/legs around us too, so funny. Yes, gotta love them.
It’s funny, ya know. We bitch and moan and tussle with them for space each night, and then if we’re away, I miss them so badly it’s not funny. These creatures are masterful and slipping under our skin, aren’t they?
Smarter than we are in that respect. Check out this link. This rings that bell.

Brilliant!
Andy struggles to maintain his position in our bed too…I’m sorry you had such a lousy night’s sleep, yet am kinda touched that it closed with a kiss from Zeke. He’s your boy.
Maintain position is an ongoing battle. Push back. Push back again. He’s our boy. Yes, he is. 🙂
your dog, our cat
Nice.
Just lean back into him and enjoy the fur therapy! xo
Exactly!
My best friend, Cinnamon, has gone to the big dog beach in the sky. Or wherever. But I still say that some of my best childhood memories were of waking up with Cinnamon curled up in protection at the bottom of my bed. Enjoy it while it lasts.
So true Susan.
haha, where have I experienced this before?! The trick is to never give in, but desperation makes us do things we never thought we’d do. So the King wins and we get sleep and hurting back. 🙂
Exactly Kristi…we always pay.
LOL those darn pets do manage to take over, don’t they?
They certainly do Darlene
Man’s BEST friend! And by his low growl when you got up, it appears to me he doesn’t like sleeping without you, either.
Laughing. Or maybe, he doesn’t want me to drag him off the bed. (Now this is more likely) 🙂
