Inspired by: “Whatever may be the tensions and the stresses of a particular day, there is always lurking close at hand the trailing beauty of forgotten joy or unremembered peace.” — Howard Thurman, Meditations of the Heart (Harper, January 1, 1953) (via Make Believe Boutique)

Nothing you ever understand will be sweeter, or more binding / Than this deepest affinity between your eyes and the world.

alone at water, its open eye, without seeming to move

I am always watching
the single heron at its place
alone at water, its open eye…
without seeming to move…
The bird is more beautiful
than my hand, skin more graceful
than my foot, my own dark eye…

TGIF: the herons…; and the world I’ve known; all fading past me into peace.

  • Post Title from Siegfried Sassoon’s poem titled: Falling Asleep

…his long neck folded

All winter
the blue heron
slept among the horses.
I do not know
the custom of herons,
do not know
if the solitary habit
is their way,
or if he listened for
some missing one—
not knowing even
that was what he did—
in the blowing
sounds in the dark,
I know that
hope is the hardest
love we carry.
He slept
with his long neck
folded, like a letter
put away.
