~ Witold Gombrowicz, in the opening of Diary.  Just before the outbreak of World War II, young Witold Gombrowicz left his home in Poland and set sail for South America. In 1953, still living as an expatriate in Argentina, he began his Diary with one of literature’s most memorable openings.

  1. Wow. With one click, I just found myself reading the whole forward to the book! It did not help me feel I back asleep… “Diary” seems a fascinating read…

  5. Yes…. why didn‘t I see that, Beth?! Or was that before I subbed to your blog?

I sometimes think that the opening sentence can make or break a book. Which is as sad as If one might be compelled to buy a book just by its cover! (Which I totally did because there was a dachsie on it. And was it SOOOO WORTH buying this book!!!

  9. I had a professor in college who loved Gombrowicz and produced many of his plays. I found it all pretty fascinating as a 17 year old who had never seen anything more “way out” than “The King and I” – I got to star in “Yvonne Princess of Burgundy” – many more strange playwrights made my studies with this man unforgettable. I remember thinking, “I don’t really quite understand this, but there is something going on with these strange words and images.” Thanks for sharing.
