  2. Still want to see it…and will…. I did enjoy BlackKKlansman enormously–actually a true story. At first I thought this movie might be a take off on Chapelle’s comedy skit, but it was the real deal!

  4. We went to this movie back in December, shortly after it came out. Brenda picked it, and I went along for the ride so to speak, because I hadn’t heard of it. Loved it! The script with its mixture of humor and drama made this very worthwhile, even during the more difficult scenes. The synergy that developed between Tony and Dr. Don Shirley was wonderful, and I especially enjoyed the role played by Viggo Mortenson as Tony Lip.

  5. OMG 😂
I saw my name and got scared. Because everyone now and then you put someone up there in a post, then gut and fillet them, your catch of the day.

So glad you enjoyed it. I loved it. Their friendship. Everyone’s face when he showed up for dinner.

Interesting about how the movie came to be…he wanted until both men passed away in 2013, then he embarked on crafting his screenplay and seeing it go into production….

Vallelonga, must have had an interesting childhood…He certainly was a keen observer. comfortable in his relationship with his father and Mr. Shirley…
“Making the film more than half a century after the events it depicts hasn’t muted its powerful message about overcoming prejudice. Lip “was a product of his times. Italians lived with Italians. The Irish lived with the Irish. African-Americans lived with African-Americans,” Vallelonga says. The trip “opened my father’s eyes…and then changed how he treated people.”

The first time I ever heard a jazz concert live was in 1963. I was15. The performance was at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. This concert established the standard, to my ears, for jazz. It was, of course, the Don Shirley Trio. I’ve been listening to him ever since.

  16. I enjoyed the movie. Great acting and good story. That said what the movie reminded me of was the trips I used to take with my parents across the US in the 50’s and 60″s where in certain states we could not stop. My sister and I wanted to use a restroom but my Dad would keep on driving. We didn’t understand at the time. Today my son lives in the South and I tell him when he leaves a large metropolitan area be careful. Things have changed and yet even in 2019 haven’t change. A good book to read if you haven’t already is “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson that goes into this topic in greater depth.

    • Robert Shoffner! So very good to hear from you. I hope you and family are doing well. I was so happy to see your name come across my blog. And so very sad to read your comment. I’m off to Amazon to get a Kindle copy of the book. Thank you.
