Lightly Child, Lightly.

I’m getting somewhere now, I’m feeling lighter. I’m coming unstuck from scrapbooks, from albums, from diaries, and journals, from space, from time. Only a paragraph left, only a sentence or two, only a whisper.

I was born.

I was.

I.

– Margaret Atwood, from “Life Stories,” in The Tent

  5. Am I really the only one worldwide who has tried to read Handmaids three times and could NOT finish it???? I knew about Margaret Atwood at an ‘early age’ when I lived in Canada and I bought all her books. She is a genius but her writing is often too harsh for my world. Last summer when visiting UK I took all her books with me to bring to charity shops because I knew I wouldn’t re-read any of it.
BUT boy, she CAN write! She has an über-wordly intelligence, is deep and sarcastic, caustic and true. She is a category of her own. She just isn’t for me; I feel that the world needs more smiles, joys and even if this puts me in the ‘pink glasses’ class, so be it.
