Every year there is a brief startling moment…

gif - grass - rock - wind - ocean - Edward Hirsch - poem - poetry - FJORD, SCANDINAVIA, NORDIC WILD, LANDSCAPE

And every year there is a brief, startling moment
When we pause in the middle of a long walk home and
Suddenly feel something invisible and weightless
Touching our shoulders, sweeping down from the air:
It is the autumn wind pressing against our bodies;
It is the changing light of fall falling on us.

  ~ Edward Hirsch (“Fall”)

  1. ‘The changing light of fall falling on us’…magnificently true. Today it is rainy and chilly – a day of football, crockpot stew filling the house with delicious smells that are only delicious when the summer gives up its hold on the day..The Times crossword puzzle and the gentleness of naps that leave a little drool on the pillow..Ah fall..

  3. Yeah, sometimes when you’re on the road in the autumn and least want or expect it, it comes in the form of snowflakes.

  6. Hi from the UK where autumn has definitely seen off summer. What a wonderful image and poem, and how lovely to see the grass moving in the wind. Haven’t seen that before. If you have a chance I would love it if you stop by at soulsnet.com. I wrote a similar post yesterday about the Hidden Hand, and featured a lovely photograph, not mine incidentally, called One red maple leaf, which sent the message out that summer was over.

    Would love to know how you got that grass moving.

    This is a re-post of a blog from David Kanigan. To me, it personifies autumn beautifully and I wanted to share it.

  11. Fall is trying her best to emerge here in Souther CA. But Summer wants to keep her crown and keeps coming back for her close-up. People at the lagoon today, tan bodies moving quietly through the water on their paddleboards, dogs frisking in the cooling waters and kayaks slicing through a gentle wave. From June to October, the scene is the same. Take a look at this video I put together for you East Coasters and those in the middle.
