of the things you have to do today…

Down near the bottom
of the crossed-out list
of things you have to do today,

between “green thread”
and “broccoli,” you find
that you have penciled “sunlight.”

Resting on the page, the word
is beautiful. It touches you
as if you had a friend

and sunlight were a present
he had sent from someplace distant
as this morning—to cheer you up,

and to remind you that,
among your duties, pleasure
is that also needs accomplishing…

~ Tony Hoagland, from “The Word” in Sweet Ruin.

  2. I like this! Think I’ll start adding ‘laugh’ or ‘smile’ to my daily ‘to-dos’, just as a little kick in the can… 😀

  10. Yes yes yes…
There is one thing on my list today.
Beach. Finally a day off and it’s so beautiful here today.
I almost made a to-do list last night. Then said f*ck it!

  12. Sunlight awakes and renews…We walked the dog in peace this morning, the sky clear today, the slow transition to Fall is teasing, upper 50’s coolness then 88 to 90 in the afternoon…starting in the morning the sunlight falls across the cheery, vibrant, vivid, bright sunflowers, the bees work the hundreds of sunflower heads from just about sun-up to just past sundown…the squirrels have started gathering in our garden, the migratory small birds are stopping in the garden, so much life happens between the welcoming of the sunrise and the setting,as it sinks in the western horizon, we stayed out in the garden until it was dark, last evening …first Venus appeared, then as the sky grew darker the stars slowly made an entrance, always love the Dipper, didn’t even note the Moon though I’d seen it in partial when it was still light …we hold onto the moments outdoors, in the light,,, for our winters are dark…///PS: one of my daughters friends said that every time he drives up the road past our house he glances at the sunflowers, smiles and feels happy (he doesn’t even know about how many are out back)…I’ve thought it would be cool to call our place “Sunflower Sunrise Farm” and paint that on the gate…we did use to grow for market…though we do not live on a farm…one time a man stopped and ask if he could photography the sunflowers I said sure and out came his tripod and he set up his equipment…SunLight is Life giving, so essential…

  13. I should have left off the last two words, so obvious and so redundant…live and learn… 🙂
