Walking. God is not Dead!

57° F. yesterday, Spring is in the air. I contemplate dragging out the outdoor furniture from the basement.

Then, this morning arrived. 20° F, feels like 3° F, winds up to 20 mph from the North. Brutal.

I walk, thinking about sitting on the outdoor furniture in the basement, reading a chapter or two — with a floor heater at my feet. Maybe the furniture goes out next month.

I walk. It’s been 1,762 consecutive (almost) days on this daybreak walk at Cove Island Park. Like in a Row.

The park, with its handful of regulars, has had a new entrant. Let’s call her Janet. Janet rolls into the park taking the same route each morning, skipping along the breakwall to the cliff, pausing for 5-10 minutes to belt out a tune at the top of her lungs, arms and hands clutching for the heavens. Unclear what she’s singing and why she needs to belt it out at earsplitting levels that can be heard at the far reaches of the Park.

So this morning, just another morning, here comes Janet. And there goes the Wildlife, DK and other park patrons quickly moving in the other direction.

Charlotte Wood: “The beauty of being here is largely the silence, after all.

Janet, who never says hello, never says good morning, is belting out another tune feet from me as I climb down the rocks to walk the low tide.

Cara happens to catch Janet on the video. “What’s she singing,” I ask.

God’s Not Dead” by the Newsboys.

My God’s not dead, He’s surely alive
He’s living on the inside, roaring like a lion
He’s roaring, He’s roaring
He’s roaring like a lion

I smile. The wind picks up, gusting up to 25 mph, and I head back to the car.

And then we left, carrying the feeling that we were traveling towards a wind that would scatter our lives beyond any manageable scope. (Canisia Lubrin, Code Noir)

He’s not dead! Excellent.

Now would be a great time for the Big Guy to nudge a few things back on track.

NOW would be a great time to hear You Roar…

  1. interesting. personally, i like it when the Big Guy whispers. leave the roaring to the lions 🙂 … but, i get you!

      1. right. it’s important to turn down the volumn. naturally, hard to control, when someone is hollerin’ in your safe place… <3

  2. Of all the times I’ve waited for you to thank me…. This was not it.

I will say however, watching you scatter down those rocks…out of the way of the oncoming “traffic” is a visual I won’t soon forget.

As for your message… I couldn’t agree more. “Now” …. Now would be a good time to hear Him roar.

    1. I seem to be constantly missing many points of discussion – I don‘t get your comment, nor did I, I think, get Dave‘s post, nor anything. I just think that it is far too seldom that someone is singing (or even shouting if you will) w/o constraint or fear of being overheard… somewhere in all this probably lurks a piece of humour which escapes me – is it not being American?

      1. You don’t miss a thing Kiki! It’s less about the singing and more about the delivery. “Janet” is aggressive to say the least in the sharing out of musical autonomy. Yesterday was probably her most aggressive display. The Cove at dawn is generally serene and meditative. I think DK was spot on with his perspective on this. “NOW” would be a great time…. Humanity could use some faith.

  3. What a lovely write this morning! Way to go “Janet”! You be you, while Grumplestiltskin manoeuvers the rocks, quietly 😉

  4. 🤦 *Someone* should tack up a sizable note on one of those trees, “God is also not deaf!”

  5. I applaud Janet for being a free spirit and being herself… And I hope she is happy.

However, disrupting “other people’s enjoyment”… is not OK in my opinion. Perhaps Janet should hum the song during her morning walk, and turn up the volume when she is home alone, perhaps taking a soothing hot shower!

PS: currently in the great white north (12:30 PM), the temperature is 9°F with a windchill of -2°F. Yesterday it was 40°! Whoa!! Fortunately the forecast calls for a warm-up on Tuesday.

  6. before I read your words, I smiled…. seeing and hearing the woman sing with conviction and joy (I thought) and I thought: Good on Dave, he‘s learning and he likes it.
Then your post destroyed it all! You know, every time I find the ‚Big Guy‘ as you name him, should really do something about something – I hear a whisper: Yeah, but you‘ve got the power to decide, I‘ve given you a free will!
Do you *really* think HE would want the world to be what it is these days?? No, don‘t blame Him/Her/It, that would be far too easy.
Try to see the good in ‚Janet‘ – not everybody is singing – she‘ll have a reason. Be glad to be able to hear, let the lions roar. Let it become quiet within yourself.
Now I‘m gonna listen to Janet once more.

    1. Thanks Val. Your thoughts remind of this passage: “Inconceivable as it seems to ordinary reason – you and all other conscious beings as such – are all in all. Hence this life of yours which you are living is not merely a piece of the entire existence, but is in a certain sense the whole.
Thus you can throw yourself flat on the ground, stretched out upon mother earth, with the certain conviction that you are one with her and she with you.”
