And yet the morning washes everything away… I think, where would humanity be without morning? Even the most violent need is calmed by dawn, and you can almost catch the fresh scent of hope. The day is a child before it ages and it ages very quickly here, making those early hours all the more miraculous.
— Hisham Matar, My Friends: A Novel (Random House, January 9, 2024)
Notes:
- Just finished this book. Highly Recommended. Here’s an additional passage: “I became, in silent and private ways, powerfully aware of the fragility of all that I treasured: my family, my very sense of myself, the future I allowed myself to expect.” And another: “I had my own words, blades packed in the mouth, capable of cutting my tongue wide open. I feared speaking them and feared not speaking them, and I knew that, like all things of consequence, they could not be postponed or stored away for later use. If I missed my opportunity now, I thought, I would have to carry those words unspoken forever. Sounds in the dark.” And one last one: “A thousand and one things could befall us and the people we love the most would have no hint of it. Which is why we must remain close to them, within an arm’s length.”

Yes! Wherever would we be without the promise of the morning? A new day, a new start, a new moment waiting for the adoration it inspires
Yes!
This an amazing image 😍
it sounds like an amazing read. the new day means everything to me.
Over the book. Awesome writer.
You did it again! Your book recommendations are better than the NYT top 10. The transition times of each day are filled with whispered adventure and risk. A thin place where we might have a glimpse of something we don’t normally see! I’m inspired to write this afternoon; thank you.

So glad! Thanks Carrie!
Great quotes and wonderful photo!
Indeed🎈
Yes! Soak it in – the image, and the passage.
Yes! Thank you Carolyn
Wonderful, very tempted to read this.
Thanks Claire.
Wow! A day late to this party, but no less enthusiastic for the delay. This sounds like an amazing read, pal, and your pairing of word and image? Exquisite. Happy Monday….
Thank you Lori. Have a great week.
The image from Island Cove is the perfect back drop for this book about POSSIBILITY and all that matters. The author’s understand of speaking up versus remaining unspoken touches on an aspect of our human predicament. How often do we wish we had the wit and the grace to say something important without attacking in a way that causes harm?
And THAT is the punch line Valerie!
Tranquility, in a photo. This prompted me to take a deep breath.
Good!!!
