Dallol Ethiopia, January 22nd: A camel caravan carrying salt mined by hand is led across a salt plain in the Danakil Depression on January 22, 2017 near Dallol, Ethiopia. The depression lies 100 metres below sea level and is one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth. Despite the gruelling conditions, Ethiopians continue a centuries old industry of mining salt from the ground by hand in temperatures that average 34.5 degrees centigrade but have risen to over 50 degrees. Ugh! Just the thought of 50 degrees C leaves me limp and exhausted. Poor camels! I bet their humps are sagging, too.

Similar conditions to the salt mining in northern Mali. Apparently the camels refuse to move if the salt isn’t loaded in the exact same way every day.
Good for them. I’m not sure I would move at all.

Dave, you are most welcome…any time I notice a camel photo I think of you! How people and camels become acclimated to their environment…escapes me…
I’ve been to Palm Springs and it gets hot…the highest temp. I’ve experienced was 109, with out a/c…autos…as a married couple the first car with a/c was in the early 1990’s…I will never have a car with out a/c and if I am ever fortunate enough to have a different house it much have a heat pump with air (no more ceiling heat)…old window mounted a/c has a lot to be desired. and then I think of those who live without a home…and my perspective changes and I think of others, with out clean water, shelters, etc…
