“Mohammad Azmi, a 55-year-old former contractor, has dedicated his life to rescuing stray dogs and cats, despite living in a country (Malaysia) where dogs are considered taboo and filthy…However for Mohammad Azmi, who is fondly known as Pak Mie, his love for these animals is unconditional, as he, with the help from his wife, splurge their savings on the stray animals by providing a shelter, food and medication on daily basis, apart getting donations from concerned citizens… This also means that they have to lead a simple life; so simple that they sleep in the car parked outside the shelter that they built just to make sure that no one harms the animals during the night. Although Pak Mie knows that he will never get anything in return by sacrificing his normal life, he is hopeful that he will continue to do so until his last breath.”
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

It’s hard not to watch this without the blur of tears..It’s astounding that cultures, religions, etc choose to interpret their tenets to support the ‘rightness’ of wrongheaded thinking. I love the words of the man who provides the rice “even when they’re dirty, their soul is clean”. Exactly. I was kid of surprised that the SPCA isn’t helping them out (given that a spokesperson appears in the video). Ok, enough. This was great.

Yes Mimi. I had similar reaction and mixed emotions. And, at the end of the day, Pak Mie and his wife are doing work of saints.

Well, this one has me weeping. What a dear man, and what a huge heart. I feel like hopping on a plane and flying down to get that little scruffy fella he holds up to his face. It breaks my heart to think of any animal being abused or neglected…just cuts me to the quick….

I was speechless by what they do and what Mohammad Azmi said that everything that has happend to us “Human beings” is because of our own misdeeds. As far as Islam is concerned Prophet Mohammad [P.B.U.H] once cut his shirt because a cat was sleeping on his lap and he was getting late for his prayers but he didn’t want to wake her up. Thanks Dave for sharing a great post.

Acts of beauty never cease to amaze me. Sacrificial acts of beauty are far more beautiful than words could explain. It could be said even for the human, perhaps especially for the human, “when they are dirty, still their souls are clean. Thank you for sharing this.

Such a saint. It’s so good to hear of someone brave enough to care for dogs in a country that hates them. There’s a man who exercises his nine rescue dogs in the local park near where I live. He has travelled the world to help them. One of them he rescued from a Far Eastern meat market. When he first brought the dog to the park, you could still see the marks on its sides made by whip lashes. Now it has a beautiful white coat with no marks showing, and is the most loving dog, despite what it has been through.

I feel so optimistic when I read stories like this! Thank you so much for sharing, David! Pak Mie says dogs are the best friend a man can have. I’d say Pak Mie (and his family) are the best friends dogs in Malay can have!
