“You know why trees smell the way they do?” Murphy asked, looking up from her hammering. “Sap?” Logan guessed. “Chlorophyll?” Murphy shook her head. “Stars. Trees breathe in starlight year after year, and it goes deep into their bones. So when you cut a tree open, you smell a hundred years’ worth of light. Ancient starlight that took millions of years to reach earth. That’s why trees smell so beautiful and old.”

What a beautiful thought. I’ll never experience freshly sawn wood the same way again….
Yes Lori. Me too. I grew up around trees all my life. Big Pines. They do smell beautiful. And I saw this quote and said, aha, so that’s it! 🙂
Breathing in the starlight – what a magnificent thought. Feels so loving and peaceful and right somehow..
Yes Mimi. Exactly. And so Sunday.
Absolutely! (please note only one exclamation point, though in my head, there are multiple ones)
Funny how certain posts get in your head. I am much more cautious about popping the exclamation points now. 🙂
Very interesting. I love the smell of wood and trees in general. Nice post!
Happy Sunday!!
I’m with you. Happy Sunday to you too…thanks.
Inspirational, poetic thought.
Hi Alex. Yes, I thought it was too…
I’ve always loved the smell of wood. Good to know I’m not weird. At least not about that. 😉
You are not alone (on wood or the weird part). Let’s call it eccentric and take it up in class a notch. 🙂
Eccentric, yes. Much better. My IQ just shot up 20 points too.
🙂
I too love the smell of wood. I have a 175 year old pine armoire that I sniff regularly :). Old, new, fresh cut, burning, live wood each with its own scent – Yum.
p.s. I love doors too – especially the ones made of wood
Cool. I can’t see that I’ve ever sniffed a door, but birch trees, cedar trees and a host of others, yes!
Just wonderful. I love this so much. Something to hold onto and think about often. I live in Redwood tree country in Northern California. They are the most amazing creatures.
Michael, I keep forgetting that you live in Redwood county. Blogosphere makes you feel next door. Yes, Redwoods are in a class of there own. Thanks also for the share on Twitter Michael.
I love this thought….breathing in starlight! (only one exclamation point). You definitely have me more aware of using these now David 🙂
Smiling throughout Tina. 🙂 Have post coming on using words like “very.” This one has stuck with me for a while…
I am sure it has… 🙂 and how are you doing with smiley faces? 🙂
Not great!
Love that pic, and the explanation. 😉
Thank you. I happen to trip into both…
Love this… 🙂
I figured you would Carol. This is right in your swim lane…
You know me… 🙂
Awesome post!!!!
Why hold back? (maximum number of exclamation marks allowed without getting stupid).
Laughing!
I love this idea! That trees smell of ancient starlight. Absolutely brilliant! That sends my imagination off spinning in all sorts of directions! 🙂
Doesn’t it! I read it a few times early this morning. Set it aside. And asked myself, why is this still stuck on me? It is brilliant…
Very creative and interesting photo and post.
Thank you!
But when all is said and done, I like the bumper sticker that says, “Hug a logger. You’ll never go back to trees.”
Funny!
Great picture and thought concept!!
Isn’t it!
Where did this quote come from? I can’t find any attribution.
No idea. Source for quote is listed and linked above. (conflictingheart)

Oh, I love that photo; It gives me ideas for a painting! Never thought about starlight but it’s a cool thought.
Thanks. Yes, it is cool!
Love the thought and photo. Thanks David
Thank you Bill.
