And then, there was snow.

1st snowfall of 2024. 33° F, wind gusts up to 20 mph. 7:15 to 7:45 pm. January 6, 2024. More photos from this evening’s walk at Cove Island Park here.

A wee bit of relief from the anxiety tied to “The End of Snow

  1. Ours started a short time ago, too. However, our temps are at 14℉, but feels like 3℉ (sounds so much colder in Celsius -10℃, feels like -16℃! Our wind is only gusting at 11 mph. I decided to forego the walk for now 😉 Good on you for going out there!

  2. Well, you’ve got me beat Dave… Current temp in Vermont (10:36 PM) is 21°F, windchill 13°. Snow just starting. I live a bit south of Dale (90 minute drive)… I think she sent the snow to me as a gift. (Just kidding Dale ;-))

Beautiful photo! Thanks for adding beauty to the world. We need all we can get as you well know!

Trivia for the day: my tiny brain recalls from high school… how to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head (approximately). Unfortunately, I can’t remember how to do it in reverse, lol. For an approximate conversion of Celsius to Fahrenheit, simply double the Celsius value, and add 30. A more exact conversion is (C * 9/5) + 32 = F
For some bizarre reason, I have a halfway decent memory for numbers and simple math formulas, but names… Forget it!!

      1. You did last night at 10:36 p.m. Since then it has been snowing steadily. We currently have 5-6 inches and still rising. The forecast says we will hit 7–9 inches when the snow stops this evening.

Unfortunately, a fair amount of this will melt as the forecast is for a high of 49° on Wednesday!

As a kid I can remember January temperatures staying below 0°F for a solid week, and occasionally a few days longer than that. Most of the coming week (with the exception of Wednesday) our high temperatures will be about 33–35°. 🙁

  3. So pretty! We might get snow on Wednesday, hmm – south of us there is a snow storm and heavy accumulations on the way to the mountains traveling up river and the mountains are finally getting blasted…the skiers are happen as our the ski resorts -they always hope to open by Thanksgiving…that didn’t happen…

  4. That first snow – flakes are delighted with themselves, swirling and dancing before settling onto the ground. A muffled silence, the welcome when coming home – skin tingles all over the place and feeling grateful – for all of it.

  5. Ahhh, how I love these experiences . Something so tranquil about that falling snow…the gentle whisper as it drifts past the ears, the soft squeak of one’s shoes as you cut a fresh path, the simmering light as it bounces off the facets of each flake. Is there anything more magical?

  6. Well the blizzard hit parts of the state and absolutely blasted the mountains, roads are closed, ski areas Closed as no one can get there, the snow is too many feet deep and the wind makes it unsafe to operate the chair lifts… the photos look shocking with big fir trees almost totally buried…
