you are positive that this is all you’ve ever wanted in the world

There is no explaining this simple truth about life: you will forget much of it. The painful things you were certain you’d never be able to let go? Now you’re not entirely sure when they happened, while the thrilling parts, the heart-stopping joys, splintered and scattered and became something else. Memories are then replaced by different joys and larger sorrows, and unbelievably, those things get knocked aside as well, until one morning you’re picking cherries with your three grown daughters and your husband goes by on the Gator and you are positive that this is all you’ve ever wanted in the world.

  1. I woke up early and was just looking at my tickets to go see her speak and get this book in the coming week. I cannot wait!

  2. I’m reading this now…and was kinda annoyed when I had to stop to recharge my kindle. She’s brilliant. And the words ring true – these moments between wanting more and fulfillment – we hold onto the moments of grace.

    1. Also, I’m not sure why this reminded me of As For Me and My House by Sinclair Ross, but I think you’d like that one, too. And Sinclair Ross was Canadian, so I think it’s mandatory reading 🙂

  3. She has made my TBR list! I have a tiny strip of paper (nestled beside the fortune cookie numbers to play) in my pocket wallet, lest I forget a name: “Madeleine L’Engle, Natalie Goldberg, Brian Doyle, Ann Patchett.” I have some Mary Oliver, now, but she was on the list once and thus, as always, thank you DK and commenters for such wonderful suggestions & insights!
