Cover of The New Yorker Sept 21, 2020 issue by Artist Chris Ware: “I live in the quiet, relatively diverse, and leafy “village” of Oak Park, literally across the street from Chicago, and all summer long I’ve seen neighborhood almost-but-not-quite get-togethers, not unlike what I drew here…I think vastly more people still try to get along in America than not. Our cities aren’t exclusively anarchic blast zones, and the suburbs aren’t all xenophobic cloisters. Yet, now, the weather is cooling, and we’re all heading back inside to await the results of what will surely be the most contested election of our lifetimes. The real fear is what may result: not a democracy or a republic but something that somehow stifles both.”

  2. Laughing…what Beth said! Thought things were looking up and then, bam, the sucker punch of the last line. I am trying desperately to cling to hope that we can find our way to a brighter future. This past 8 months has just knocked the stuffing out of me.

  3. All I know, in my tiny amount of experience compared to every else here, is that more beauty has surfaced in the past 8 months that ever before. And more $h*t has surfaced than I ever thought existed. It’s seems like the two go hand in hand. And, if this is what it takes, then be it! There are enough of us you can handle it, especially the younger generation.

    The village of Oak Park is a very unique neighborhood. I would live there but it’s too far from the lake.

  8. I read about this cover in another article and I must say: I love the New Yorker…. What I dont quite understand is: Is this YOUR prose – I can’t see it from the reader and if I open your post on the iPad, I cannot ‘sign-in’ to comment….. I can, in principle, only comment when I’m working from the computer. And I’m off it for today.
    In that other article, the small group of 3 people were discussing everything but the T-word and what goes on…. So, it seems that literally everybody I’ve ever heard of fears the worst and hopes for the best. So do I, for you all, because another decision is just simply not conceivable.
