A farmhouse window far back from the highway
speaks to the darkness in a small, sure voice.
Against this stillness, only a kettle’s whisper,
and against the starry cold, one small blue ring of flame.

a quiet, familiar, comfort.
A rush of memories as I read the first line. Brings to mind childhood days of waking in the pre-dawn hours to accompany my grandfather to the barn to care for the livestock and seeing my grandmother silhouetted in the kitchen window, the warm yellow light spilling out into the darkness. When we got back, the kitchen would be warm and suffused with delicious smells. And there would be a lovely breakfast–buttermilk biscuits and gravy was a favorite of mine…
Wow. Transported. Beautiful.
It is a day for fond memories …. I wonder if the snow does that.
It does. Snow, huddled inside in the warmth. It does.
Wonderful, “A Winter Morning” stirs the heart in so many ways! and, what a fabulous, eye catching photo that you’ve chosen to pair the prose with. Loved the Rothko like quality of it. cheers, Debi
Thank you Debi. I found the photo and the poem to be so evocative.
