Ben Sollee, 30, is an American cellist, singer-songwriter, and composer known for his innovative playing style, genre-bending songwriting, electrifying performances, political activism, and wide appeal. His music incorporates banjo, guitar, and mandolin along with percussion and unusual cello techniques to create a unique sound. His songs exhibit a mix of folk, bluegrass, jazz, and R&B elements. Sollee has also composed longer instrumental pieces for dance ensembles. Raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Sollee began playing the cello in elementary school. Besides classical music, his early musical influences included recordings his parents played of Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Billie Holiday and Otis Redding, and later he discovered folk music. Wow. A new seed for my Pandora station.
He is so good. And there is something about the Cello that hits one at the core…
You are an amazing curator of compelling music. I appreciate you sharing all that info with us. The cello is amazing – I came across an article about strengths a while back that included info on how Yo Yo Ma hated the violin but latched onto the cello. http://www.copyblogger.com/bright-spots/ Talent is fickle. 🙂 Thanks again.
Thank you for the kind words Maureen. And thanks for sharing the link. I’m on my way to check it out.
Oh, man, that’s so true. The things that guy can do with a cello!
