The Igloo Village of Hotel Kakslauttanen in Finland boasts 20 thermal glass igloos that allow visitors to enjoy incredible views of the Aurora Borealis from the warmth and comfort of their own hut.  Nestled in the wilderness near Finland’s Urho Kekkonen National Park, Hotel Kakslauttanen has one of the Arctic Circle’s best views of the Aurora Borealis.

The sparse trees and complete lack of light pollution reveal millions of stars each night, and during the peak winter months the location offers incredible views of the Northern Lights.  Each glass igloo is fitted with thermal glass walls and ceilings, that insulate the interior to keep it warm and cozy at night. The glass also contains a frost preventative, maintaining crystal clear panoramic views even when temperatures outside drop to -22 degrees fahrenheit. Fitted for two people, the igloos are small enough to be efficiently heated without consuming too much energy.  The main hotel also includes the world’s largest smoke sauna complete with its own restaurant, and an ice bar and snow chapel that is built fresh every winter.   1. Wow..can you imagine looking at the sky from such an enclosure?? And however did you find out about this too?? You never cease to amaze.

    1. Yes, would be amazing. Info goes on to say that there are no guarantees of course that Northern Lights show up. Not like a movie that starts at 8pm. (Shocking. :))

      1. What a surprise – I think we see star-filled nights here..I can’t imagine how magnificent the sky would look from there (with or without the Northern Lights – tho’ that would be amazing).

  5. WOW! I’d definitely want to be there, its on my bucket list! I just hope its warm and insulated there.

    I remember going to the Ice Hotel in Quebec City a few years ago and wondering how people actually stay overnight there. I was walking around the place bundled up in my layers of pants and leggings and then sweaters and shirts and heavy coat and I was still freezing to death…

  6. Super idea. I am not sure I could deal with walking from the hotel to the igloo, but seeing the northern lights that way would be amazing.

  7. As I’m closer to the bucket referenced in “bucket list” I’ve chosen not to keep a list. But this would be a lovely place to visit as long as it can be traveled to safely. I’ve seen the aurora as far south as Long Island and the stars on Cape Cod where I live are spectacular.

  9. We used to see northern lights when I lived in northern BC, but haven’t lived there for years. However, we did see them on our trip to Montana this year and it was fantastic. The igloo idea would be an interesting way to see them.

  10. Thanks for sharing this, I can add yet another place to my to visit list. Cold weather locations just don’t seem to make the list as often as sunny warm ones, go figure.

  13. That would be awesome to do. Just like the moutains we were surrounded by growing up…my years in Alaska and seeing the Northern Lights all the time were taken for granted.
