Travel Photographer of the Year 2022: Matjaz Krivic (Slovenia)

Location: Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Nanyuki, Kenya

Caption: Najin 33 one of the last two Northern White rhinos left in the world resting under a hot afternoon sun with her friend and caretaker Zachary Mutai in Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

The Northern white rhino is all but extinct. The two last males died several years ago. The two females are still with us, but too feeble to bear babies. In an Italian lab their eggs are now artificially fertilised by sperm from the late males, and kept at minus 196 celsius, in hopes that surrogate rhinos from another sub species can carry the northern white back from the brink.

  5. The photograph says it so elegantly: SAD. Interesting to go back and see that that is everyone’s response.

  6. While in Tanzania in 2007, I went on safari in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Crater) and our guide spotted and pointed out a White Rhino, mentioning there were but a handful left in the world. Hopefully, they will be able to fertilize and harvest the eggs.

  8. Sad, yes.. but haven’t many species of many animals been brought back from near-extinction? Science moves ever forward (and some bad actors are not all of mankind). Neither apathy nor selfish menace need win; we must hold onto hope. Or pray and hope. 🌷 That costs us nothing, and it’s an active do-ing, if we cannot otherwise personally change matters. Someone will, if we believe so. Hope is the wind beneath wings.

  11. This just guts me. They both look so defeated (though I realize that wasn’t the intention of the photo). What a mess we have made of our world. ☹️

  14. Such a Photo! The symbiotic relationship between two males of their species – enduring the heat and the searing, sizzle of the midday sun…upon the Savannah within the Great Riff Valley – where life starts and ends…the knowledge that ” Najin 33 one of the last two Northern White rhinos left in the world” Heart Shattering.
