some peace to gather my addled thoughts….

So I have gone. There were days when I felt I had already gone and so all I wish for now is a cool, quiet room and some peace to gather my addled thoughts. I think I was good, although I could have been better.

—  Terry Pratchett, “I think I was good, though I could have been better’: Terry Pratchett and the writing of his life”. Pratchett had Alzheimer’s. Five months before he died, Terry Pratchett wrote five letters, sealed them in envelopes and locked them in the safe in his office to be opened after his death. This was the one he addressed to Rob Wilkins. Through the 1990s, Terry sold an average of 3 million books each year. Nobody in Britain sold more. (The Guardian, Sept 17, 2022)

  1. I love Terry Pratchett’s books – I came to his books later than most, and they touched a giddy chord whenever I began one. Those five letters are probably fascinating

      1. We all have something to say, DK.

In 2012 in went on a trip that I was not sure I’ll be coming back from. I left letters. Daily letters for the 12 days I was going to be gone. And more, just in case. The more are back in my possession now. Not opened.

  2. A friend of mine is a huge Pratchett fan. I have yet to have sampled but it’s high on my list.
I love the idea of leaving letters (though I do not wish to need to…)

  3. Looking forward to this biography. It’s not quite the same as ‘new Discworld novel’ day but is as close as we can get.

  4. I think it’s so beautiful to leave letters and share wisdom we have gained in life.

It was only recently I was in a plane returning from a holiday and for some reason I felt led to write a letter to both my girls. Nothing was happening that made me believe I would die, but I had an I overwhelming feeling to write to them. It was very moving but beautiful at the same time. 🙏🏻
