This day of mine
was lost
like all the other days,
half of it thinking of yesterday,
half of it thinking of tomorrow.
— Abbas Kiarostami, A Wolf Lying in Wait: Selected Poems, (tr. by Karim Emami & Michael Beard)
Notes:
- Portrait of Abbas Kiarostami in Cinematheque
- Title & Inspiration: Aldous Huxley: “It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply. Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.”
I didn’t know Kiarostami was a poet too.
Thank you for sharing.

Try being a daydreamer. You’re not in the past, the future, or the present!

Gypsy, I’m confident you excel at this, Master craftswoman.

Very close, David. The full nickname is “barefoot gypsy.” Dad always says, “Here comes the barefoot gypsy.”
This Kiarostami thinks he knows about not being where one needs to be.

I didn’t see you walking around Michigan Ave barefoot. No. I did not.

Then you weren’t looking. Because there aren’t that many people that walk barefoot on Michigan Ave.
And there in nothing derogatory about being a Gypsy. I’m delighted you recognize that in others. There’s a hidden gem in all of us, the Gypsy we are ❤️

You have to be joking. There is no way, no way, you are walking barefoot on Michigan Ave.

After a long day at work? There are days when the only way the tired can go away is through bare feet on pavement. The ground sucks the tired out.

You got one eye on the past, another on the future, and you will surely, miss out, on the now.

There’s a lot of truth in that. Don’t we often do that, reminisce and daydream, future and past, losing the “now.” Oh well, tomorrow we can reminisce about how we lost today.

A gentle reminder about how we expend the most worry on that which we can’t control…today is deserving of more attention..

We have to make an effort to, at the very least, make one third about today. Baby steps, right?

Right. Half-baby steps for me…

Isn’t it ridiculous how difficult it often is to stay in the moment?
