Sunday Morning

Don’t forget, as busy as you may be, to quickly raise your head and cast a glance at those great silver clouds and that silent blue ocean in which they are swimming…take notice of the resplendence and glory that overlie this day…because this day will never, ever come again! This day is a gift to you like a rose in full bloom, lying at your feet, waiting for you to pick it up and press it to your lips.

Rosa Luxemburg, (1871-1919) in “Reform Or Revolution

    1. Oooh Lori. This was good.

“In primitive life forms the eye began as a light-sensitive depression in the skin; the sense of sight likely evolved from the sense of touch.

The complex human eye harvests light. It perceives seven to ten million colors through a synaptic flash: one-tenth of a second from retina to brain. Homo sapiens gangs up 70 percent of its sense receptors solely for vision, to anticipate danger and recognize reward, but also — more so — for beauty. We have eyes refined by the evolution of predation. We use a predator’s eyes to marvel at the work of Titian or the Grand Canyon bathed in the copper light of a summer sunset.”

        1. Yes, she captures it so beautifully. And more…

Between the senses and reason lies perception. At home or afield, that is where amazement resides, shunning explanation… Intoxication with color, sometimes subliminal, often fierce, may express itself as a profound attachment to landscape. It has been rightly said: Color is the first principle of Place…

Each of us possesses five fundamental, enthralling maps to the natural world: sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell. As we unravel the threads that bind us to nature, as denizens of data and artifice, amid crowds and clutter, we become miserly with these loyal and exquisite guides, we numb our sensory intelligence. This failure of attention will make orphans of us all.

          1. “Color is the first principle of Place.” I had never thought of it this way, but it is *so* true. When I think of Illinois where I grew up, the first thing that springs to mind is green…acre upon acre of seed corn and soybeans waving softly in the breeze. Vacation = the deep blue-green of Caribbean waters. Australia is RED…that clay earth that has rested there for centuries. And so it goes. Fascinating….

  1. Rosa Luxemburg words and your photo, resonate with me…so beautiful…
As I’ve been been reading your blog content I’ve often thought of people who are missing out on the wisdom, care, joy, humor and beauty of your content.
One of several reasons I haven’t been online often of late… is that being diabetic a person’s eyes can become damaged due to high blood sugar…so later this month I have yet another eye check up…to see what will happen from that point forward. I also see my regular doctor for diabetes re check this week…I’m hopeful and I know that I can make a difference with maintaining my blood sugar better…

You’ve had content that’s mentioned eyes Tatyana Tolstayua for one and content my I think Ted Kosner? I’ve included below encounters with people seeing color for the first time, ever!!! Through technology starting just this spring a world of color has opened up to many and I just hope that they see Sunrises in Person and see some of your Beautiful Sunrise Photos!!!

“My external eyes were still awaiting the sunrise, while my internal ones were looking around, seeking out details.
One day, all of a sudden, my sliced-up eyes could see again; my vision returned completely and immediately, 20/20, as promised. And this was bliss!”
~ Tatyana Tolstaya, excerpts from “ 20/20” in “ Aetherial Worlds: Stories” (Knopf, March 20, 2018)
You shared several paragraph from Tatyana Tolstaya back on April 8th, 2018 the above quoted sentences where sentences in different paragraphs from your former share…
