“Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada spray painted a 27,000 s.f. giant mural as a public memorial dedicated to a doctor who died from COVID-19. Each life is important, unique and incalculable, especially during the global pandemic, and the work memorializes essential workers. The mural is titled ‘somos la luz’ – translated as ‘we are light.’” (Read more @ Design Boom)
tears here – wonderful but I’m haunted by the idea that soon enough cars will be parked on this doctor’s face and none of the artist’s work and the ‘memorial’ will be seen…. You speak of a mural, but looking at the photo, it isn’t (or is it?)
Thank you for sharing those precious reminders that America isn’t T…. but a mostly wonderful collection of warm-hearted human beings.

Powerful. Like Kiki, however, I wish such a stunning piece were on a wall rather than the surface of a parking lot…

That is stunning. And I’m sure the artist knows it is ephemeral. Life will return to a somewhat normal one day. I’m rather curious now to look into his other works and if they, too, are in places that eventually take over his art.

Agree, that it is stunning (this coming from a man who can’t draw a stick man on piece of paper in front of him).

Rodriguez-Gerada wriote this about his Identity Series, (He worked with charcoal for that project) “These time-based portraits gradually deteriorate. They become a metaphor of the fading of life, of fame and of the things we first thought were so important.”
He also wrote that, “The pieces fade away like the warmth after an embrace […] The importance of the piece is the whole process of creation, destruction and memory. ”
When an artist comes to their work with such compassion and understanding of our human condition, our hearts see not just the piece of art but the essence of our humanity shining in the light of love – a love that transcends and, in so many ways, defies our human condition.
His work is powerful.

Thank you for sharing this info Louise. Takes an artist like yourself to value that.

Louise, this makes me all the sadder for the ephemerality of such great art. And to find a compassionate, humble and clear-sighted artist like him, is a gift unto us, as such!
As so often, you have put everything I meant to say in a short comment…. Thank You.

He takes art to an elevated level. And I especially love how the medium he chose for his display is another part of his message.
That being said, I can’t wait to see his contribution to the latest current events we’re facing in the country. Because artists are our true leaders. And because silence and not taking a stand is wrong!!!
