“How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that’s so deeply a part of your being that you can’t even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.”

—Paul Bowles, from The Sheltering Sky

  1. In Tess of the D’Urbervilles, there’s a point when Tess realizes that while we mark the date of our birthday each year, we also unknowingly go through the anniversary of our death too. This passage makes me feel like I did when I first read that passage in high school.

  2. Fantastic! I remember watching a blood moon rise over a lake in Bavaria–it came up from behind a mountain range and it looked as though the world were on fire. I was transfixed. (P.S. I think there’s one more opportunity this year to witness this gorgeous sight–Sept 17 as I recall, but should doublecheck that…)
