It is raining hard today. The dogs come in one by one, soaking wet. I dry them each with a towel, and they stand patiently until I stop. Then they give themselves violent shakes and water sprays all over and I find myself wishing I could do that, it might solve all my problems, this shaking shimmy for which there is no human equivalent.
~ Abigail Thomas, What Comes Next and How to Like It: A Memoir
Side Note: “…Animals can shake themselves almost 70 percent dry in just a second…Imagine if you could come out of the shower and, instead of using a towel, you could just press a button and in one-thirtieth of a second you’re 70 percent dry…Researchers posit that the shaking dry was an evolutionary response. We think this has been evolving over millions of years of time to become so good…A furry wet animal can carry about five percent of its body mass in its fur, while a wet ant can carry three times its body mass in water.” (Source: Globalpost.com)

Footnote: Personal research shows that a wet dog will shake at an even higher frequency when you bring him or her into a freshly cleaned house OR have just dressed up to go out to dinner. 😊

Mimi! I was thinking the exact same thing – Shake It Off. Hahaha. Our dog got a bath yesterday and I was sure to stand clear of the flying water.

Thank you Susan – I feel redeemed in the face of David’s thumbs down. 😉 There’s also that part after our dogs get baths, when they feel obligated to roll around on the rugs, ensuring their dampness for hours.

Interesting factoids in the video — I shared it with a dog-loving cousin of mine. I also love the music. So I got an education and entertainment in the same video!

Amazing facts but more amazing is their body movement.

Dave,
If not for centrifugal force, neither would the dog be dry nor you be wet.

Bumble shakes off even the flee medication from his back unless I hold him still 🙂 But did you know that Ospreys too shake off water after a dive. They do it in the air before arriving back to the nest. Even when flying with a fish. Quite a sight.

I’ve never seen osprey do that, must be amazing to watch.

It would be great to able to do that – save on all those towels. The bathroom might be a bit wet afterwards though!! 😀
