In the UK there’s a huge problem with homelessness, related to the closing down of the large psychiatric hospitals and the failure to provide a viable alternative in the community. Also, there are more men living on the streets than women, as they can’t get pregnant and make themselves eligible for council housing. Of course, this is a generalisation. Other issues leading to homelessness are drug and alcohol related, but also unemployment leading to repossession of homes or an inability to pay regular rent anymore has had quite an impact.

Despite the hardship, I found it interesting how gentle and thoughtful the interviewees were in this clip Carol. Yes, to this passage.

Sometimes I think you need to take a lot away…all the “stuff” that clouds what is really important in life…before people really get it. Some of the best people I have ever known are people who have suffered hardship.
