“What is a quote? A quote (cognate with quota) is a cut, a section, a slice of someone else’s orange. You suck the slice, toss the rind, skate away. Part of what you enjoy in a documentary technique is the sense of banditry. To loot someone else’s life or sentences and make off with a point of view.”
— Anne Carson, “Foam (Essay with Rhapsody)” (from Decreation)

Beautifully said- though it diminishes the impact another person’s artfully constructed sentence can change one’s life.
And that the author may receive enormous personal satisfaction in having a positive impact on another (many) persons’ lives
True dat. Collecting and sharing quotes is one of my favorite pastimes, however, I was listening to Eckhart Tolle yesterday and when he said ‘don’t quote the Buddha, BE the Buddha’ it was like a getting hit with a 2×4 in the middle of the forehead. I think there is a time to quote and a time to be quoted…
Laughed. You and I learn the say way. With a 2×4.
quotes can be used for good or evil–depending on the slice we use
Now that’s true.
I used part of your quote in my blog post today–thank you for the inspiration
My pleasure. Thanks LouAnn. I’ll be sure to check it out.
An interesting definition, but I, too, am troubled by the sense of larceny. As someone who lives for a good quote, I prefer a sharing interpretation…. 🙂
Laughing. Of course you do. But you have to admit, beautifully stated if not a wee bit controversial.
I am obsessed with quotes & this seems to be hurting my feelings. I am with Mimi.
Oh no. I hurt your feelings. Time to post a baby or puppy picture. Stay tuned.
Awww.. Thank you Dave 🙂
Does the larceny (I don’t buy that; a wordsmith or sage wants to quoted as much as an artist wants to be viewed) of others’ brilliancy excuse us from creating our own? I like the quote Todd shared (thanks, Todd); basically, talk is cheap. (Now who said that?)
Laughing. Talk is cheap sounds like a Vince Lombardi quote…
Can I quote you on that?
Of course. And you can do it without attribution. 🙂
The world is littered with orange rinds.
Crafty!
Reblogged this on saturn1ascends.
Thanks for sharing.
Not a problem 🙂
