Week in Review: Pushing things that come to your hands a little higher up, a little farther on…

Self: Tough week?

DK: Let’s talk about the weekend.

Self: No highlights? No inspirations?

DK: Two word summary: Falling behind.  And, exhausted.

Self: That’s three.

DK: Listen Pal. Don’t get cute.

Self: OK. OK. OK. We’ll keep it upbeat.  I’ll cut you some slack.  Gimmee one BURSTING ray of sunlight.

DK: Direct reports.  2-down managers. Sales side leadership. SMEs. Gritty. Scrappy. Poised. Professional. Proud. Taking body shots. Best in business. One word for this pack: L-E-A-D-E-R-S.

DK: And those closest to me.  Including my assistant, a feisty Chihuahua seeking some form of acknowledgement for her self-assessed extraordinary effort. (And, searching for love in all the wrong places.)

…Those closest to me – – getting the full gale force winds of DK’s “hi-potential” extraction. Push.  Pull. Push.  Pull. Push. Extract. Push.  Back off.  Too hard.  Offend.  Apologize.  Pause.  Take breath.  Re-load.  Do over.  Cajole.  Push.  Push.  Push.  Pull.  Oh, oh, too far.  Re-boot…

Wish I could tell them that I believe.  In them.  Wish I could tell them if it ever gets quiet, I’ve given up (on them), then, and only then is it time to be worried.

Self: Chihuahua? Hmmm. Interesting term of endearment. (Wonder if she’s a blog follower?) And these are your bursting rays of sunlight?

DK:  Yes sir. The week’s chapter is closed.

People who have accomplished work worthwhile have had a very high sense of the way to do things. They have not been content with mediocrity. They have not confined themselves to the beaten tracks; they have never been satisfied to do things just as others so them, but always a little better. They always pushed things that came to their hands a little higher up, this little farther on, that counts in the quality of life’s work. It is constant effort to be first-class in everything one attempts that conquers the heights of excellence.

Orison Swett Marden (1850 – 1924)
