Walking. With God(s).

Walking, 1,769 consecutive (almost) days in a row at Cove Island Park at Daybreak. Like in a row.

Daylight Savings Time change has brought out the Humans. Strike 1.
It’s high tide. Strike 2.
No clouds. Strike 3.
A trifecta signaling a poor photo day.

I walk.

The morning begins to turn.
Lailah, a shepherd mix, is ahead of me. That’s her in photo above.
She can smell the old guy with candy.
Her Mom struggles to contain her, Lailah’s giddy with full body wiggles and a fluffy white tail frantic with anticipation.

Then comes white-shoe Murphy, a weekend warrior, and a bit skittish. But he looks for me, and the candy of course. And an ever so gentle wiggle on his back side, and a tail in high swish mode.

I walk.

And there he is.
Spyro, the Siberian Husky, with paws as big as my hands.
I place my camera and backpack down, and we do our thing.
I kneel on the gravel path, and we wrestle, his owner watches Spyro nipping my ear, then my fingers and then my entire hand. Let the senile old man roll around the dirt with Spyro and have his moment of joy.

And then it’s Home. Sunday. Pancake Day. Wally knows what’s coming as soon as the griddle comes out. Today, it’s a buttermilk pancake with Vaca Frita and raspberries.

If there is a God, here he is, packaged in these loving creatures. There’s never a bad morning with puppies…

If it increases love, it’s virtuous. If it decreases love, it’s vicious… So you see, we just have to choose, at every turn, to make the more loving choice! — Ada Calhoun, Crush: A Novel

  1. Love the puppy pics! I’ve never had a dog and I really really really want one! I better get cracking before the dog has to push my wheelchair!

Love the Wally video (of course!). That husky would have “taken out those pancakes” in less than a second I suspect 🙂

Happy Sunday, My Internet, Friends! 🙂

  2. gosh, you are REALLY spoiling wally. I mean, to give him pancakes with raspberries…. and he doesn‘t even seem terribly eager for them! but then he gets going and the hoovering begins in ernest! funny that the raspberries stay until the end – that seems such a waste of wonderful food. as much as i love dogs, i‘m not sure that giving them such delicious food is the right thing to do. has he just simply got you wrapped around his little feet (fingers!)? can‘t you say no? i never gave any dog ‚human‘ food except here and there a bit of ham or such – otherwise it was food cooked for dogs, and smuggling grated carrots in their feed.

      1. so, how come you get away with it? are you living in different quarters? not having breakfast together? oh, the questions are just overrunning me….

  3. ha, who said on EVERYTHING? but we do have breakfast together, and all through wintertime we have candles burning, fairy lights in bottles and plants – I can only recommend it. you start the day differently and we are deeply thankful for these small pockets of time together. And yes, we live in a rental flat together…

      1. I giggled too….. nice thought! HH is extremely brain-loaded and lacking 99% of my more terre-à-terre approach of life. BUT I got him to appreciate all that whimsical stuff and when I haven‘t lit the candles or fairy lights by the time we sit at the table, HE‘S putting them on. Still haven‘t found out if he does it to give me joy or if he‘s enjoying too – don‘t want to know really….

  4. Dogs make EVERYTHING better. Full. Stop. Our crew knows that Sunday morning = turkey bacon. A more adoring audience my hubby will never find. 😜❤️

    1. I don‘t know turkey bacon. But no matter, we don‘t have hefty, heavy brekkies, but it is fun to see what other nations go for. Sending you a big hug, Lori

  5. (Trust me, Susan knows!) Those other pups are nearly as gorgeous as Mr. Wally. (Susan, look away for a moment.. My opinion is that since our fur-babies don’t live very long, and we are the only God they know, I’m never opposed to sharing a bit of people-food with them, since they share a bit of God with us.)

  6. Beautifully said and a perfect description of the morning. I just feel a smidge bad as I believe I was the first “Human-strike 1” ….. that you saw this morning. That wasn’t about me right?

  7. Love the clip of Wally doing his bit to help with the dishes. “Pre-rinse” is the name we gave Emma when she does this, her favourite job of helping with that job. She’ll have to share that title with Wally now. “Wally Pre-rinse.” (I like how you let the tension build. Will he eat the raspberries or not?)

  8. Beautiful Dogs, our friends.. The photograph is so beautiful too. The others too, especially I tried to imagine this Spyro and you. Someone should have taken your both photographs. And and finally your(ours too) Lovely Wally! Should be so delicious… I watch twice… About God, I do agree with you too. Thank you dear David, have a nice new week for you all, Love, nia
