“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.”

I do love that Erma Bombeck quote. Happy 4th!!
She was SOMETHING.
yes!
I hope this tradition remains – the acrimony in the air, the dissonance, makes me uneasy. Nonetheless, here’s to the 4th!
Agree with all that Mimi.
❤️
I loved her. She was so often bang on.
Happy 4th my Not-officially-but-by-choice American friend 😉
Laughing. By mutual consent. Thanks Dale.
It’s always an interesting day for us Canadians who came south and stayed. I’m glad it has worked out so well for both of us!
So agree Caitlin. All the best to you.
Thanks. You too!
Yes, she said that very well.
Excellent. Allways loved Bombeck. She had such an understated/subtle humor.
She did.
this does not really make sense to me. Patriotism is definitely not tanks and military might but it is more than over eating at a family picnic. A day to celebrate freedom and commit to being sure that freedom is not granted selectively.
that is a great quote, and partly describes why I love my country so much. Happy 4th…
Thanks Jim. And me too, for a Country that welcomed me in.
and we are lucky to have you!
Happy 4th of July…thankful for our freedoms../// loved Erma Bombeck her column & books. When she was 1st published she rec’d $3. a column! I wasn’t even talking or reading when she was 1st published in 1965 read I’ve purchased 2 or 3 of here books at the thrift store. She is funny. I liked Joyce Manyard formor articles & column…Andy Rooney liked him too and Charles Kuralt (On the Road) and his replacement (On The Raod) Steve Hartman who is so gentle…
Fascinating!
Happy independence day!
Thank you!
I love EVERYTHING from Bombecks mouth…..
Happy Belated 4th, pal. Hope that you and Susan had (and are still enjoying) a relaxing weekend. And I echo what Mimi said. Uneasy times…
Uneasy bordering on frightening. With you Lori.
Two F-15’s did a flyover on the 4th in a nearby small town America…we happened to be outside and to our delight they passed low over our house!
Cool!
We have a similar celebration every Australia Day, David.
Happy belated July 4th.
xoxoxo
Hi Carolyn. What date is your celebration?
Australia Day celebrations fall each year, David, on the 26th Jan. We also get a ‘public holiday’ as well. Being our summertime lots of people enjoy the outdoors on this day; more so than any other!
Terrific. Thanks Carolyn.
