Big Baby

A rare black rhinoceros calf, born on Dec. 9, is seen with his mother Maisha at a zoo in the Czech city of Dvur Kralove nad Labem. (David Tanecek, wsj.com January 4, 2018). More on the story here.

  1. Little fella has no idea how special he really is. Adorable, and worthy of an ‘awwww baby.’ Mimi will take care of that shortly, I’m sure of it. 😁

  2. But I‘m still also thinking of the corpse in the arms of that other post of yours where the mum got killed for her horn….. That really had me in tears and will be haunting for long!

  3. Precious, slippery baby–welcome to the world! So glad these zookeepers are so well-trained and able to nurture these wonderful creatures…and so-o heart-warmed that they will eventually be sent back to their African habitat. Thanks for the good news, David!

  4. This one, born, though in captivity, will up the numbers. And cannot replace the other one killed uselessly but still offers a little bit of hope.

  5. I, share the same feeling and thoughts that you and Kiki state…the earlier 12/22 image “Soul Crushing” I don’t like that men did this and another man who helps wild animals was too late this time to intervene and the photo of him gently holding the dead baby rhino is such a sad sight… it is a battle cry for the need for further protection from ruthless poachers. Thankful for the zoo program in Czech Republic.
