In search of the Holy Grail

When I played, I was in an unrelenting search for a new driver, convinced that it would straighten out the vicious slices and softly land my ball on the Bermuda grass 300 yards down the fairway.  Did I find the Holy Grail? No. I quit the game. There’s perseverance for you.

Similarly, I search for a pen.  Not just any pen.  A Pen that would take me on a magic carpet ride to beautiful cursive, to decorative calligraphy, or perhaps to a less ambitious outcome, a product just neat and legible.

I have tried them all.
Ballpoints. Rollerballs. And Fountain Pens.
Nibs that are paper thin, standard and broad.
Pens that are cheap. Mid-grade. And expensive.
And I search.

So, last night, when I came across “The Best Pen“, my heartbeat slowed, I put my cookie down, and my eyes hungrily devoured the review.  I may have found the Holy Grail.

The “Best Pen” was “universally loved by our four experts (experts with 1,200 pen reviews between them and over 17 years of combined experience testing pens).”

“Every expert we talked to gave it a perfect score for feathering, bleeding and drying time, and it also either came first or equal to the top in smoothness of writing, flow, comfort, reliability and design. That put it at the top of the pack for eight of the twelve factors we asked about.”

Here’s a photo.  Is it just me, or is there a halo around this pen?

Order it on Amazon?  Naw.  I can’t wait for next day shipping.

I’ll be standing at the front of line at Office Depot waiting for the doors to open this morning.

  1. this is so funny, i am a pen geek as well, always on the hunt for something that ‘feels right’ for writing. i have always felt like the goldilocks of the pen world, – too hard, too soft, rarely just right. for whatever illogical reason, it matters to me, i have to use a certain pen when completing (hopefully) the sunday nyt puzzle, another for writing personal letters, one for writing haiku, and on an on. the pen is a part of the experience for me and it makes a difference. thanks for this review, i’ll certainly be at the store as soon as i leave my kinder’s side, and i know you will understand.

      1. i will be sure to do so and hopefully i can fall asleep writing with a pen that’s just right, as goldilocks would do if she loved to share her words in the written form instead of whining.

  2. Being a pen “snob”, I cannot imagine using a pen with “a clicker”…but I might have to stop at Staples just to satisfy my curiosity…. I’ll sign the receipt with a fountain pen and as usual, the teenage cashier will say, “Wow, what is that?”

  3. I hesitate to say anything, but I too am in search of the perfect pen (also the perfect jeans, lipstick and compact blush but we don’t have to go there). I lean towards fountain pens actually, but now I have to give this pen a try..

  4. Uh huh.. I love stationery! I always go to a stationery shop and try few pens I will check if I can get it here 🙂 Trust me choosing a pen is not an easy job. I stop using ball points just when their ink reaches the middle point because after that your hand writing gets messy.

    1. The title of this post reminded of the books “The Da Vinci Code & Holy Grail” I thought it would be something related to Holy Grail.

    2. 1) It is related to the Holy Grail. Pens fall into the bucket. 2) You stop using them halfway. Wow…there’s addiction disorder here (line up with me). 3) Sorry, I’m not a stationary guy.

      1. Addiction disorder? Laughing! If I start to count all the times when I have proven to have disorder of some kind (in your blog posts) there will be many 🙂

  5. I think I’ve found my perfect pen already. A cousin to the Uni-Ball Jetstream. Mine is the Uni-Ball Signo. It’s got a fatter grip for my sometimes arthritic fingers.

  6. Your post caught me as I am a pen-a-holic as well ~ I will be at Staples this morning to see what uniball jetstream I can get there. Or I’ll resort to Amazon, but like you, I don’t want to wait! There’s such a difference in writing when you have the holy grail of pens in your hand! I heartily agree! 🙂

  7. A long ago student of mine and I realized one day that we shared a geeky affiliation for papers/pens/fonts…so your love of this pen is fully appreciated. Furthermore, I just got a pen from a colleague, and came back to my own office and *demanded* (ok, not really…I asked very nicely) my admin asst. to buy a boatload of the pens for my office! And…(yes there is more!)…I just finished 6 weeks of golf lessons..jury is still out as to whether I will continue or not….
Who knew, a pen? Happy penning Dave!

    1. Laughing. My one trick friend continues to ride me. (4 tricks actually. Mothering. Photography. And I’m sure you have 1 other field of Mastery that I’m unaware of)
