Is your job killing you?

Nice way to start off our Monday Morning, huh? A few nuggets pulled from the info graphic below:

  • Middle-aged workers who have poor relationships with their colleagues were 2.4x more likely to die sooner.
  • Women who reported having control/power in the workplace were 70% more likely to die than those who did not feel in control.  (Really?)
  • Surprisingly, relationships with Bosses had no ties to increased death, even though it was the top cause of leaving a job. (Really?  Now I’m wondering about sample size)
  • Top 10 Most stressful jobs.  (Oh oh)
  • 44% say that their job is excessively stressful.
  • In the UK, stress is now the #1 cause for leave of absences.
  • Stress has been called the 21st century’s equivalent of Black Death.
  • Prolonged stress is equivalent to carrying an additional 40 pounds.

  1. A change of lifestyle is recommended, even if only small changes, in my work with people who suffer from stress, I have found many people do not know how to actually relax, they try and often don’t succeed because of ingrained habits, but once they have succeeded and if they can build it into their day, the benefits are numerous.

  2. Daily prayer (and appropriate action) and exercise are helpful to me.

  3. And contrary to population opinion, working for yourself might not be the way to go because most startup companies are undercapitalized. That means that if you don’t have the money to hire all the appropriate people for your company, you’ll be playing attorney, CPA, bookkeeper, marketing advisor, nightly cleanup crew, and on and on.

I can completely believe this having just got out of a job working in the city. I was always amazed at the misery on people’s faces and these are supposed to be the best paid, best educated, crème de la crème of the UK. I noticed a lot of pressure and competitiveness that people put on themselves in this type of environment. That is why I no choose to work for myself and am much happier.

  5. Stress is a top killer, for sure! Being “in control” is defnitely not what it is cracked up to be!

  6. In my case, my supervisor is passive, and he does not make decisions, but instead allows his employees to make them for him. He does not intervene when employees have conflicts, but allows those conflicts to escalate. That is VERY stressful.

    • Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of a quote recently posted by Christian @ The Upside, one of my favorite bloggers. “The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.” (Elie Wiesel)

  7. The best job is a job that lets us utilize our gifts and passion. Any other job is just that a job to pay the bills. Stress is a killer of creativity and our bodies pay the price with side effects like migraines weight gain and loss. Great post I enjoyed reading.
