Newsday: “Texting while driving has become a greater hazard than drinking and driving among teenagers who openly acknowledge sending and reading text messages while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.  The number of teens who are dying or being injured as a result of texting while driving has skyrocketed as mobile device technology has advanced. Researchers estimate more than 3,000 annual teen deaths nationwide from texting and 300,000 injuries.

  1. Permission granted! One should have a sense of responsibility that we are all connected. If one doesn’t love themselves that doesn’t give them any right to put others in trouble.

  2. That’s would be me. My daughter got into an accident because of an …. like that. When she applied the brake to avoid that swerving person, her car rolled twice and she nearly didn’t make it out of her car.

  3. I’ve had near misses on several occasions because of some twit texting. I’ve called the police and reported the person on at least one occasion. Flying down the road at 60+mph, weaving from lane to lane while you’re thumbing, ‘Yo, what’s up?!’ please…..I’m really hoping that the car companies will eventually wise up and install a mechanism so that, when the vehicle is in gear (or moving), a blocking mechanism is activated that prevents texts from being sent or received.

I recently heard the famous filmmaker Werner Herzog interviewed on NPR about a new PSA film he made called “From One Second to the Next.” Very powerful. http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2013/08/16/212337606/herzog-plumbs-guilt-and-loss-wrought-by-texting-and-driving

How many have to die before we get the message (if you’ll pardon the pun)…..

    1. Thanks for sharing the NPR piece. Powerful. “Accidents skyrocketing.” “Life changes in a moment.” (I appreciate you being my unpaid NPR clipping service. Much appreciated.)

  4. My son just got his learner’s permit. We’ve gone over this many times & from what he tells me – they cover this almost every day in class. This can’t emphasized this enough to ALL drivers. Same for other distraction while driving. Just this week I was behind some woman putting on make-up while driving – going 30 on a 55- WTH??? Yes- I laid my horn on her she finally moved over. But – c’mon…

  5. I can always tell that someone is texting while they are driving, their cars swerve, they brake or other erratic behavior. I think Sonia is spot on!
