Drone On, Please.
Shore break, Trey Ratcliff: “South Island of New Zealand. Just north of the Haast Pass on the West Coast is a pretty desolate and lonely place. In fact, the entire South Island, which is *roughly* the size of California, only has 1 mil people on it (Cali has 40 mil). Anyway, most of the west coast of the South Island is covered in a dense and beautiful forest. I found this area of the coast where the waves are undercutting the land and the trees dramatically tip over into the ocean to be battered around.” (via thisisnthappiness)

Through these woods I have walked
Through these woods I have walked thousands of times. For many years I felt more at home here than anywhere else, including our own house. Stepping out into the world…was always a kind of relief. I was not escaping anything. I was returning to the arena of delight. I was stepping across some border. I don’t mean just that the world changed on the other side of the border, but that I did too…They recognized and responded to my presence, and to my mood. They began to offer, or I began to feel them offer, their serene greeting. It was like a quick change of temperature, a warm and comfortable flush, faint yet palpable, as I walked toward them and beneath their outflowing branches.

Sunday Morning
“Researchers made a surprising and encouraging discovery in British Columbia this week: a new baby orca among the endangered Southern Resident killer whale population in the Pacific Northwest. “The calf, designated as L122, was spotted alongside mother L91 by NOAA scientists and colleagues near Sooke, British Columbia,” NOAA Fisheries West Coast announced on Facebook. “L122 is the fifth new baby to come into the population since December 2014.”

Big Blue
“When Patrick Dykstra saw a life-sized replica of a blue whale in the Smithsonian at age 16, he dreamed of having an underwater encounter with the biggest animal on Earth, according to the Daily Mail. The filmmaker, born in Denver and currently based in Dubai, fulfilled his dream in the tropical waters off Sri Lanka where he captured stunning underwater and aerial videos and images of blue whales while swimming with the giant sea creatures, which can reach 98-feet long and weigh 200 tons.
The whales are the largest animal to ever inhabit the earth, and outsize even the biggest dinosaurs. Stunning drone footage captures the enormous mammals from above, while in other shots a kayaker paddles just metres from one of the awe-inspiring creatures.
“Nothing on Earth compares to the experience of being side by side with the largest animal to ever inhabit the planet and to dive into its environment,” Dykstra, 35, told the Daily Mail. “I use my photography and videography to help study these animals in hopes of understanding and protecting them.”

Hump Day HumpBacks
Drones, Dolphins, Dana Point
“Captain Dave Anderson of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari in Dana Point, California recently filmed a 5-minute video that contains some of the most beautiful, jaw-dropping, footage ever taken with a drone from the air of a huge mega-pod of thousands of common dolphins stampeding off Dana Point, California, three gray whales migrating together down the coast off San Clemente, California, and heartwarming close-ups hovering over a newborn Humpback whale calf snuggling and playing with its mom as an escort whale stands guard nearby, filmed recently in Maui. Capt. Dave had to film this off a small inflatable boat, launching and catching the quadcopter drone by hand.”
