Your title says it all. In spring there are so many hatches of all sorts of insects and that’s what young waterfowl need to eat so they can grow quickly (the quicker the better for their own survival).

They are very early (said so on IG, sorry to repeat). I took plenty of cool pics if ‘our’ surviving young swan, last year’s baby, now nearly fully adult, but with still some brown feathers. I don’t care terribly about swans but they are stunning in their regal behavior (until you see them trying to fly off…. that is) 🤣🦢
