    1. Thank you for sharing. Tomorrow, I will share my favorite, what camera took what picture and which picture I felt best captured the moment as I saw it. Both photos were using standard autofocus settings.

          1. What I’m saying is that you have to control all your variables.
And, yes, from my experience, watching the sunrise for years, a minute makes a big difference.
Both pictures have to be taken at the same time for an accurate comparison.
            Where’s your tripod?

  1. The bottom image (despite the lack of light). The top image overall is better, but I prefer the heron(?) in silhouette of the bottom image.
I’ve experienced major differences using different cameras and lenses, so know that both images are ok.

  2. Top image by far. Much more interesting composition IMHO. Love the texture in the foreground (the silhouette of the branch is arresting) and the lacework of the utility poles along the right edge both catches the eye and keeps your gaze within the frame. Also like the strong light/dark contrast.

  3. The top one, though I would try to level the water to flat horizontal rather than its current slight tilt. It’s warmer and speaks of sunrise.
The bottom photo is tonally too muddy. There’s no light detail and no distinctly dark contrast. Also, the right side of the shot lacks the compositional closure the bit of land gives the top shot, balancing the land on the other side, even though the power lines are a bit of clutter. That detail invites the eye out into the bay beyond before returning to the heron or egret in the foreground.

  4. This is bloody creepy – on the reader, the light filled one was the second – then I wanted to go back to your post and it was the other way round…. what the heck?! To be clear, I go for the more atmospheric one, the one with the light…. and f… you WP for messing things up in such a way. How about I’d never looked at the actual post?

  5. No need to give me your canned response ( 😉 ), I shall add my voice to preferring the top one for all the reasons specified so perfectly by Jnana and look forward to learning which is your favourite 😉

  6. Top one for me. Love the warm color. Also the Framing is better. The telephone poles on right help frame the photo in balance with taller trees on left side. Also I like the telephone poles showing this nature spot is right there on edge of our modern world. Better story.

  7. sorry for the late response here…pick one over the other? impossible for me. You are capturing time, and she will not settle into one image over the other. Full homage to the power of the minute. It’s one picture to me.
