“Do you have concerns over mild memory loss?”

Hell, yes. But…

This was the tag line for an ad from Prevagen.

The ad ran during the peak Nightly News time slot.

Prevagen’s estimated annual sales are $200 million +.  The dietary supplement is said to be on sale at over 20,000 retail locations nationwide including CVS and Walgreens. ($41.99 for 30 capsules at CVS)

Prior firm ads state:

“You might take something for your heart… your joints… your digestion. So why wouldn’t you take something for the most important part of you… your brain?”

Wow.

According to the company’s website, people who use people Prevagen (Quincy Bioscience) can “experience improved memory, a sharper mind, and clearer thinking. However, a review of the evidence indicates that these effects are not well substantiated. In addition, the FDA has warned Quincy Bioscience in the past against claiming Prevagen could treat conditions such as head injuries and Alzheimer’s disease and for failing to report adverse reactions. The FDA has also claimed that the key ingredient, apoaequorin, a synthetic protein, is not an acceptable ingredient in a dietary supplement. The FTC is also pursuing a lawsuit against the company regarding its promotion of Prevagen.(Consumerlab.com)

  1. Eeesh… How about you improve your brain’s capacity by doing crossword puzzles (check for you and me, eh?)
Learning a new language (check for me)
    Learning an instrument…
    Eating a balanced diet
    Reading
    Drugs? I don’t think so.

    1. what if we were to do a paradigm shift, and accept that it is a natural part of aging, and that we use our brains for what we choose over time? we naturally (or choose to) let some of the small stuff go, and focus on what matters to us? just like we don’t run a marathon anymore, perhaps, but get great joy from walking in the woods?

  2. That is the product made with something from jellyfish. Every time I see that commercial, I have to wonder who came up with that connection to memory function. I would think it was funny but it’s kind of scary. I’ll pass on the jellyfish.

  3. My mind is going, but I don’t mind because I can’t remember…
Heck, that is exactly why I train my mind with Sudokus, cross words, reading in foreign languages, MAKING my brain to find the right expression and not giving up until I’ve found it …. And one day when I’m less stressed out and know where I’ll spend the rest of my life, I shall learn Portuguese.

  4. They say CDB oil works almost as well. (cough, cough)

Reminds me of the old Groucho routine…
Groucho, handing box of flowers to Carole Lombard “Do you like gardenias?”
Lombard: “They are my favorite, how did you know?”
    Groucho: “I didn’t, so I got you Forget-Me-Nots”

  5. read this on FB yesterday & am still laughing:
“Ate a weed brownie last night; cooked a pizza at 15 degrees for 400 minutes …”

I bring this up b/c our generation has a lot of distractions plus aluminum in our deoderant and now, in many states, it’s legal So we may have memory loss for … what was I saying?
    🙂 HA!
