Sunday Morning

But if anything will soften me, it is food: dumplings, apple pie, sweet tea. A huge silent relief that is stillness passes through me like sun, a warm tongue on the cub’s crown, the thought of being thought of. Breath becomes easy.

        1. HH and I ate at a lovely, always wonderful Italian ristorante – HH had their famous Tiramisu and we both closed the great meal with the best espresso in any French restaurant! HH would have happily shared a second portion with all of you!!!

          1. Recurring experiences like this one, a restaurant of a small chain (I think of a total of 3-5 in the whole of F – and no, the Paris one doesn’t hold a candle to the one we go regularly), reconcile us with the lesser sides of France 🙂

  1. “The thought of being thought of.” The older we get, the more that means to us. This is your third or fourth recent quote from this book, so I looked it up. Wow, the reviews. And his history — wow, again! The book’s on my list!

    1. Why? Because we, the unprecedentedly blessed, rich, healthy, mindful, happy, were also world-historically dissociated, unconscious, and inert. If we were Sisyphus, then our rock was the self we lugged around.

      1. You write that sometimes and I never know how you mean it! When I (with my UK English ‘education’ – ha ha) say that it’s always in astonishment OR in mockery. Then I think, ‘no, that’s not what he really means!’ Or Is It?!

  3. Each batch of jam – Eight precious jars of each flavor. added to the earlier strawberry rhubarb make 24 sparkly, yummy jam…plus the overflow remainder jars in the fridge…later they’ll might be spiced pear jam, fig, or apricot? I will miss the peach amaretto jam (peaches are expensive, I so love Peaches)…The sweet lady who grew the Concord Grapes passed away a year and half ago, so no more grape jam…She had a wonderful smile and such a distinctive voice…she always had her hair just so….we drive past the farm often – the husband took down all the apple trees but left the vines, unkempt…

  4. Your Susan excels in baking I bet she is or would excel in jam making! She is a girl from Michigan after all… heck you might enjoy the process of jam making!
