T.G.I.F.: It’s been a long week

Giant humpback leaps from the sea in Monterey California as fisherman in small boat looks on agog. Humpback whales are in the same family as the largest beings on earth, the blue whale, and females can reach up to 50 foot long and weigh 25–30 metric tons, about five times as heavy as a fully-grown male African elephant. 1. This is über-amazing…. I nearly jumped out of my skin with awe and fear for the fisherman. And the young photographer; the shots of her life! Thank You for sharing this with us. Have a cool day, you all….

  2. David I love this picture. Thank you for sharing. Whilst I’d love to see humpbacks in the wild, in these climate emergency days I’ve made a decision not to fly and therefore I’ll have to make do with pictures, videos and articles. Blessings to you my friend. Have a wonderful weekend. Julian

  3. Incredible! The majesty of these creatures is unsurpassed. What an amazing experience that must have been, although as Mimi points out, it would likely have scared the bejesus out of me, too.

  4. Lol! I’d like to be able to say that such a closeness could only be imagined/longed for, but that was before the “suspected humpback’s presence” was confirmed by it’s tail fluke appearing in full just feet away from the woman barfing off the back of the (suddenly TINY!) whale watch boat that day. But breaching? Whew! It probably took a while before this fellow went back to the same spot some other day!
