Driving I-95 S. But it don’t sing and dance.

5:55 a.m. T.G.I.F.

I flip open the Dark Sky app. 24° F. “Feels like 20°. Light snow falling. Two inches accumulated.”

I flick the page to my other saved locations.

Antigua. 74° F.

Mind drifts. Soft white sand between toes. Gentle waves lap the shore line. Warm breeze sways the fronds on the palm trees, they slap against the trunk. Antigua. Sweep me away to There, Now.

March 1. I’ve had enough of Winter. And need more of Rehman Rahi:

The melting of snow, a soft breeze, a garden in blossom
Be my witness,
O Spring,
dumbstruck, yet we sing.

I crawl down I-95. Red tail lights as far as the eye can see. Highway is heavily salted, frozen slush, ruts, shoulder unplowed. Slippery when wet. Treacherous at this moment. Focus DK, focus.

Sirius playing. 70’s on 7. Neil Diamond, Forever in Blue Jeans. Money talks. But it don’t sing and dance And it don’t walk And long as I can have you here with me. I’d much rather be Forever in blue jeans. Money talks. But it don’t sing and dance…  I’m lip syncing. Head bobbing in rhythm.

Blue Jeans. No. But blue slacks. 10 lbs up in 60 days. Snug around belly. Right foot on accelerator, heater blows downward on feet, now swollen, leather tightens up around arches. Think Blow fish. Or Puffer Fish. One giant Tetraodontidae rolling down I-95.

But no. Mind just won’t go there today. Light brushes it aside.

I just finished Benedict Wells’ new book and I’m swimming in The End of Loneliness:

But isn’t everything just in our heads?

“(life) for a long time seemed to me quite random that, out of thousands of variations, this was the one that came about…it was only very late that I understood that I myself am the sole architect of my existence…I cannot be wrong anymore. Because it’s mine.”

I park the car and step into the building.

Benedict gets in the last word: “I can only believe what I feel.”

And just look at that DK. Today you feel…Great!

  1. Powerful thoughts to consider while driving through icy slush requiring focus and attention. As the architect of one’s existence, I encourage you to create one with less risk…saving deep thoughts for moments when one can savor them – like when the sky is blue, the lanes are clear and the road unencumbered. I want you to be safe, pal…

  2. Science has now proven, that if you close your eyes and visualise a place you want to be and feel you are there, your brain believes you are there. It cannot determine if it’s real time or not. How you feel creates your state of being. Glad you feel great in Antigua 🌈 Have fun 😎

    1. Karen; love, don’t you think this is a tiny tad unfair….????? 🙂 🙂 🙂
Here we are, in different shades of freezing shivering or maybe trying out our short-sleeved Ts – and you throw this divine, paradise promising Antigua shot at our frozen noses?! Unfair…. 😉

  3. As I “Live and Learn”! How nice to see the title of your blog in my inbox 😉

…”you are the sole architect of your existence…” Say.no more. Only so much blame/praise we can assign to the Universe…

Now I’ve got “Forever in Blue Jeans” stuck in my head!

    Have a fabulous weekend, DK!

  4. Good to remember, “I myself am the sole architect of my existence…” when one is discontented with one’s lot. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” ― Viktor E. Frankl Aloha, David.

  5. I got a chuckle out of the puffer fish image re: the feet. I can relate! And I had to laugh at the mention of “Forever in Blue Jeans,” because for years, I thought Neil Diamond was singing, “The Reverend Blue Jeans.”

  6. “Think Blow fish. Or Puffer Fish. One giant Tetraodontidae rolling down I-95″…lolololol! Even a puffer fish is the sole architect of its existence. You always do that, throw something unexpected in there that makes me LAUGH OUT LOUD! Seriously now, as that architect…you do one heck of a great job with your insight and your perspective. 🙂

  7. I loved how you expressed… mind never stops, imagination and memories, and what we learned and kept dancing all in our life. But some of them like you, makes a beautiful touches into the words, thoughts,… Once again, I should say, I love reading your own pieces, Thank you dear David, have a nice weekend, Love, nia

  8. You are like a demi-god of observational writing and for some reason the mood made me think of the word “Captain” & 70’s on 7. Arena Rock God – Mark Farner and Grand Funk Railroad…”I Am Your Captain” (they’re an American Band, yes loved going to concerts and my husband happened to see many amazing concerts in Winnipeg, Canada) You are your Captain navigating through your day…the lyrics other than the word “Captain” did not really go along with your mood of great – it’s just that one word…and your were steering carefully down the freeway confined in your vehicle drifting within the ruts…and he (Farner) was sailing a ship…

  9. the fans were mesmerized…and I think of those youth and young people in the audience in the video and wonder what they are doing in their lives today…do they still listen to classic rock?

  10. oh sugar….. just lost my lengthy comment by a movement of my fingers….. Was going to say that the many citations of this song made me go on YT to check out the total of this so well known earworm and now I am nursing it too in my head and can’t get it out any more! Well, thanks a bunch, DK!!!! (no seriously, it’s a great post – and Classic Rock was & is gr8!)
Happy Sunday to you and yours. For me it’s bed time after a long, long week….
