Silence…
thrilling cold —
so much beauty.
Like breathing pure oxygen.
~ Susan Sontag, from “As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh: Journals and Notebooks 1964-1980“
Notes:
- Inspired by: “The universe is still and complete. Everything that ever was, is; everything that ever will be, is – and so on, in all possible combinations. Though in perceiving it we imagine that it is in motion, and unfinished, it is quite finished and quite astonishingly beautiful. In the end, or rather, as things really are, any event, no matter how small, is intimately and sensibly tied to all others. All rivers run full to the sea; those who are apart are brought together; the lost ones are redeemed; the dead come back to life; the perfectly blue days that have begun and ended in golden dimness continue.” ~ Mark Helprin, Winter’s Tale (via beyondthefieldsweknow.org)

And just like that….. I turn on the iPad and wooofff, with a fresh, cold, invigorating breeze this wave of oxygen comes in to me from out there. Thank You – beautifully paired with that über-cool gif 🙂

With both highly admire commentators Beth and Sawsan I‘m getting confused now…. How cold is cold ? I never was able to ‚translate‘ F to C and to me, the important part of this equation is PURE, CLEAN, FRESH & OXYGEN…. where is the problem? Am I creating one? I can smell right from here on the outskirts of Paris the clean, fresh, pure, and OK, cold, oxygen emating from that gif….

26° F converts to negative 3° C.
Here in chicago in the past month we had that on our warm day. It has dropped down to negative 50° C.
Im with you, Kiki. Its clean, pure, crisp and beautiful. Takes my breath away. I love the cold. You should follow my Instagram account.

Sawsan, even with all my (considerable!) love from afar for you, these temps don‘t do ANYTHING for me! I love the sun BUT the sun doesn‘t love me. I couldn‘t live in the South of France but I definitely also wouldn‘t want to live in such cold climate. In my earlier life, when we went skiing I encountered twice a minus temperature of -17C and after the 2nd real quick outing I put my skis back and opted for a Hot Chocolate Subscription (instead of my ski pass!). Nope, not for me ladies!
btw; I lived through 2 winters in Toronto and it was sort of OKish as long as the air was dry – but I definitely can‘t await the springtime now and my suraces here are covered with tulips (27 in one vase) and tête-à-tête (tiny) daffs from the veranda (where they were protected….

i love the beauty of the stark, white, snow falling and when it makes its way to the ground. but i am ready to keep it in my memory for the season and await the awakening of spring.

We’re both in the midwest, Beth! This is the first year of my life I miss spring and summer the way I’m missing them now.

You live in heaven, Kiki ❤
My memory of it is very vivid.

Sawsan; I‘m trying to create my heaven….. luckily, in France this doesn‘t come at a price when you know where to shop! The daffs are ‚now‘ for free as I planted them in the autumn and the tulips frenzy cost me the bargain of €6.- So, what‘s not to love – and they render me VERY happy looking at their upturned faces and their bright colours. PLUS, the sun is shining today and after some phone calls I shall head outside…..

Oh, I didn’t much appreciate the oxygen when I was there Saturday morning week before last. It was really windy at 25F … and the parka I had ordered for that trip only arrived 8 hours after I had left home 🙂

I’ve seen snow blow like that across the road surface and I think of wide stretches of desert and prairie with snow blowing ferociously…in the early summer the sage blooms and the wind carries the fragrance aloft ..I grab a breath in of sweet, clean, pure oxygen telling myself to remember this moment in sacred gratitude /// I know that the wind blows like that at Mt. Washington in New Hampshire….
