“The art of flying is a short film about “murmurations”: the mysterious flights of the Common Starling. It is still unknown how the thousands of birds are able to fly in such dense swarms without colliding. Every night the starlings gather at dusk to perform their stunning air show. Because of the relatively warm winter of 2014/2015, the starlings stayed in the Netherlands instead of migrating southwards.”

Kinda puts synchronized swimming to shame, doesn’t it?! :-O
And not for nothing, but could the word for this magical display be any better? “Murmuration” — onomatopoeia at its best….

I like that this is called murmuration…. so evocative and wonderful. I once experienced a migration of small birds when I lived at the shores of Lac Léman, Switzerland. The sky turned black and there was a washing over me of really loud bird ‘talk’. There was no whispering (murmuration) involved. Large ‘bundles’ of birds rested for seconds on all the many trees around me, then took off once more and another wave of black shadows ‘floated’ for- and backwards. Unforgettable.

How stunningly beautiful and powerful.
Thanks for sharing David. It felt to me like I was sitting at the ocean’s edge listening to the waves wash in and out.
