Sunday Morning

It is a kind of love, is it not?
How the cup holds the tea,
How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare,
How the floor receives the bottoms of shoes
Or toes. How soles of feet know
Where they’re supposed to be.
I’ve been thinking about the patience
Of ordinary things, how clothes
Wait respectfully in closets
And soap dries quietly in the dish,
And towels drink the wet
From the skin of the back.
And the lovely repetition of stairs.
And what is more generous than a window?

  1. yes, and gratitude for all of them. but, i wonder – what about the stairs that cause you to tumble down them, the ledge which causes you to trip, the rug that slips under your step? ah -must be our own doing , and the choices we make, not the things themselves –

  2. This reads like a prayer.

I’m still working on my proust questionnaire. It’s not taking long because it’s difficult to answer. The truth is that I’m not ready to see some of my answers.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
    Impatience

But it is the patience of things that makes it all right.

      1. I’m stuck at a couple of questions.
I linked it to your post today because it’s all about the Patience of things. And at times I have none. Must learn, from the cup, the legs of a chair, and the floor. Must learn this lesson.

  3. Wonderful observations beautifully put. Loved it. But I have to tell my clothes to wait respectfully in the closet…they tend to be rebellious, like shrinking unexpectedly.
