Sunlight streams through the windows in the concourse at Grand Central Terminal in New York City in 1954.
The photo above was taken in 2014. Sunlight no longer streams through the windows as the construction of skyscrapers that surround the terminal now block the sun. 750,000 commuters pass through the terminal each day.

Had same reaction Beth. Sad really. I walk through the station and look up, recalling both photos. Dark.

What a shame. Seems the good old days were made with quality. Now? It’s all about the bottom line. Sad.

Exactly. And wonder if they even thought about that when they permitted the construction of buildings around it.

Great photos. Of course, being an ancient man who feels like the rest of the world is leaving me behind, I choose light over darkness. Thanks for the post.

Enlightening photos…the contrast light vs. lost..we are lost without the light, lost in the faster pace, perhaps rudderless? I notice such a disconnect among the people in the non light photo, it seems to me the people are driven by Time and the Weight of Responsibility…in the illuminating shaft of Light photo I assume people are checking the schedules though, I do notice Life, Ease and a Communion between the People.. /// I choose “Light of the World Shine On Me, Love Is the Answer…Shine on US ALLl…a ticket to Paradise”…lyrics by Todd Rungren, performed by England Dan and John Ford Coley

England Dan & John Ford Coley, wow, they are so great, as is this tune.

Boy, no comparison. The 1954 photo is positively celestial. Can’t help but think the folks being kissed by sunshine had a little more spring in their step. Sigh….

I cannot help but look at these pictures and think of what happened in Manchester England last night.
Light is needed in so many places and in so many ways.

I am so thankful that years ago our town or maybe it was the county instituted height /shadow cast rules for not blocking solar access to adjacent buildings, homes…this is for new construction as well as those adding additions to homes…

You should be thankful…your county has its priorities set right.
