The cross-walk.
The yellow cabs.
The street lights.
The cart vendor stacking his bananas.
Real things.
Yet, Upstairs, is the real show.
I turn the dials.
The brightness.
The contrast.
The tint.
And finally, the color.
The picture in picture is sharp, vivid.
I turn my attention to the World,
Gray, blurry, rushing.
A slide projector, click, click, click, click.
But the Tom-Toms beat in Thunderdome.
The Man swings his sticks.
He whips his shoulder-length hair back,
it’s sopping wet from perspiration, it rains.
Then,
Suddenly –
The tom-toms stop,
And breaking the din,
Is a Moment.
A moment of silence, of clarity, of release,
that overcomes.
I pause and wonder, why?
Why not more often?
I turn back to the World,
Grabbing the door handle to enter:
Who am I going to be today?
Notes:
- Inspired by Chuck Palahniuk from Choke: “The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because it’s only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world. You can change the way people live their lives. That’s the only lasting thing you can create.” (Source: Schonwieder)

And if the question itself doesn’t stop one from moving forward, one arrives at the answer I think..

I often think of this when I’m in a new place, meeting people who have no prior experience with me, no expectations. Frees one up to shift the focus a bit, a sometimes subtle adjustment that can have long term consequences. Loved this, DK….
